The Farallon Islands Foundation made a grant to the Point Reyes Bird Observatory (PRBO) to purchase a Global Positioning System (GPS) and training in their use for four PRBO researchers. The GPS will be used on the Farallon and Año Nuevo Islands. This system, which is accurate to within 1 meter, increased accuracy in the mapping of nest locations, shark activity, and other wildlife events. PRBO has been able to map Cassin’s and Rhinoceros Auklet burrows on these islands, pinpointing their locations for nest fidelity studies. Both these species are candidates for California’s “Species of Special Concern” list. This research is being undertaken to better understand requirements for successful reproduction. PRBO has also used this equipment to improve the base GIS map for the Farallon Islands.
