In 2019, the Farallon Islands Foundation provided a grant to Madagascar Fauna and Flora Group and Mahaliana Lab and Training Center in support of their efforts to establish a molecular biology laboratory in Antananarivo, Madagascar and build scientific research capacity among Malagasy conservationists through a research study and training workshop.
With support from FIF, these organizations purchased necessary lab equipment (3 microscopes, 3 PCR and Gel System Units, and one autoclave). They conducted a research study to estimate the risks of infection of captive lemurs of Madagascar by a potentially deadly parasite, the rat lungworm. They then used the newly established molecular laboratory and research project as a case study to conduct a five-day training workshop for veterinary students in the field of Conservation Medicine. The workshop was held at the Ivoloina Conservation Training Center and the newly established molecular laboratory in Antananarivo.
